Intel recently unveiled its new 14th-gen Core processor this week, featuring integrated AI capabilities to enhance PC experiences. Core Ultra includes Intel's new AI compute engine called the neural processor unit (NPU).
The NPU enables AI inferencing in the chip for tasks like video conferencing effects, speech recognition, and recommender systems.
Intel gave a few examples of applications that can be enhanced using AI capabilities:
Deep Render, which uses AI to compress files by 5x
Rewind.ai, a hearing aid that transcribes what it hears for future reference, including chatbot-style queries

Intel is expecting large gains in AI performance, versus relying just on the CPU or GPU. It also aims to ship over 100 million PCs enabled with onboard AI by 2025.

Microsoft just announced its new AI-powered productivity assistant, Microsoft 365 Copilot. The Copilot service is integrated into Office apps like Outlook, Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint and is set to be launched on November 1st.

Microsoft is pricing Copilot at $30 per user monthly. The launch comes after months of testing with hundreds of large enterprise clients. Microsoft is betting Copilot will save workers time on menial tasks and make them more productive for higher-level assignments.
AI Helps California Firefighters Get Ahead of Wildfires (🔗 link)
California firefighters are using AI-powered camera systems to detect wildfires before they spread out of control. The state has over 1,000 AI-equipped cameras stationed in remote areas to monitor for smoke and flag emerging fires.
Last month, an AI camera in Cleveland National Forest spotted a 10-foot fire and alerted responders before it could explode into an inferno. The technology is credited with detecting 40% of fires quicker than 911 calls since July.
By flagging fires early before they explode, the AI tools are helping California better contain wildfires. The systems use machine learning to improve identifying smoke versus false alerts over time. This is a huge enhancement and is proving to be a valuable asset to firefighters for early wildfire detection.
